Grandfather Granddaughter Wedding Dance

Conversations with Sri Ramana Maharshi (Volume I)
January 7, 1935

2. Do I need a master to perform? First asked Mrs. Piggot.
Maharshi: The performance is the result of the grace of the Master rather than the teachings, discourses, meditation, etc. These are just a secondary aid, while grace is the main cause and essential.
Question: What are the obstacles to the realization of Self?
M.: The habits of mind (vasanas).
D.: How to overcome the habits of mind (vasanas)?
M.: Performing the Self.
D.: That is a vicious circle.
M.: The ego that gives rise to these challenges by creating obstacles and then suffers the perplexity of apparent paradoxes. Find out who asks the questions and the Self will be found.
D. What are aid to perform?
M.: The teachings of the scriptures and realized souls.
D.: Can these lessons be debates, discussions and meditations?
M.: Yes, all these are only secondary aid, while essential is the grace of the Master.
D.: How long will it take to get that one?
M.: Why do you want to know?
D.: To give me hope.
M.: That desire is an obstacle. The Self is always here, there is nothing without him. Be the Self and the desires and doubts disappear. That Self-dor is the presence in the states of deep sleep, dream and waking. These states belong to the ego. The Self transcends the ego. Is not there you sleep? Did you know then that he was asleep or was not aware of the world? Only in the waking state you describe the experience of unconscious sleep as science, therefore, consciousness when you are asleep is the same as when you are awake. If you know what is this consciousness of waking consciousness that witnesses know the three states. This awareness can be found by searching consciousness as she was in deep sleep.
D.: In that case, I fell asleep.
M.: There is no harm in it!
D.: It is a vacuum.
M.: Who is the gap? Find it. You can not deny himself ever. The Self is always and continues in all states.
D.: Should I stay like I was in deep sleep and attend at the same time?
M.: Yes witnessing is the waking state. Therefore, the state will not be a state of deep sleep, deep sleep but no sleep. If you follow the steps to their thoughts, they will be lost and you are in a maze with no end.
D.: So, I must recede to the source thoughts.
M.: Exactly, that way, the thoughts will disappear and only the Self. In fact, for the Self there is no inside and no outside. They're all ego projections. The Self is pure and absolute.
D.: This can only be understood intellectually. Is not the intellect to carry aid?
M.: Yes, to a certain stage. But even so, understand that the Self transcends intellect-the intellect must vanish for the Self.
D.: Help my realization to others?
M.: Yes, certainly. Is the best help possible. But there is no one else who help. For a realized being sees himself the same way that a goldsmith gold seen in various jewelry. Only when you identify with the body, forms and figures are here. But when you transcend your body the others disappear along with your body awareness.
D.: Is it also occurs with plants, trees, etc..?
M.: Are they separate from the Self? Find out. You think he sees them. The thought is projected from Himself. Find where they come from. Thoughts arise and cease to be only the Self.
D.: I understand theoretically. But they're still here.
M.: Yes, it is as a function film. There is light at the screen and the shadows that pa-san quickly impressed the audience with the enactment of any work. Similarly, it is also true if the same representation also shows the public. The seer and the seen will then only on the screen. Apply this to yourself. You are the screen, the Self has created the ego, the ego has its accretions of thoughts that are listed as the world, trees, plants, etc. On which you are asking. In fact, all these are nothing but the Self. If you see the Self, you find that everything is the same, everywhere and always. There is nothing more than the Yes same.
D.: Yes, although I understand only theoretically. However, the answers are simple, beautiful and compelling.
M.: Even the thought, "I do not understand" is an obstacle. In fact, only the Self is.
