¿Qué es la conciencia?

En la mayoría de los casos en el lenguaje or­dinario se usa la palabra "conciencia" como un equivalente de la palabra "inteligencia", en el sen­tido de actividad de la mente .
En realidad, la conciencia es una especie muy particular de "darse cuenta" en el hombre, inde­pendiente de su actividad mental. Ante todo, "darse cuenta" de sí mismo , darse cuenta de quién es él , de dónde está , y más aun "darse cuenta" de lo que sabe, de lo que no sabe, y así sucesivamente.
Sólo uno mismo puede saber si en un mo­mento dado está "consciente" o no. Esto fue pro­bado hace mucho tiempo en cierta corriente de pensamiento en la psicología europea, la que com­prendió que sólo el mismo hombre puede conocer ciertas cosas acerca de sí.
Aplicándolo a la conciencia, quiere decir que sólo un mismo hombre puede saber si su concien­cia existe en un momento o no. Esto quiere decir que la presencia o la ausencia de la conciencia en un hombre no se puede probar por la observación its external actions. Esto está basado en el error fundamental de mez­clar la conciencia con las funciones psíquicas. Hablaremos de ello más tarde.
En realidad, en la mayoría de los casos, el pensamiento moderno todavía confía en la vieja formulación de que la conciencia no tiene gra­dos. La aceptación general de esta idea, si bien tácita, aunque esté en contradicción con muchos descubrimientos recientes, detuvo muchas posibles observaciones sobre las variaciones de la concien­cia.
El hecho es que la conciencia tiene grados bastante visibles y observables, por cierto visibles y observables para cada uno en sí mismo .
Primero está la duración: ¿cuánto tiempo ha estado uno consciente?
Segundo, la frecuencia de aparición: ¿cuán­tas veces se ha llegado a ser consciente?

Esta idea está ligada con un hecho muy importante y muy conocido por las antiguas es­cuelas psicológicas, como por ejemplo la de los autores de la Philokalia , pero completamente ig­norado por la filosofía y la psicología europeas de los dos o tres últimos siglos.
O sea que la conciencia se puede hacer continua y controlable por medio de esfuerzos especia­les y de estudios especiales.

*Trataré de explicar cómo se puede estudiar la conciencia. Tomen un reloj y miren el segunde­ro, tratando de darse cuenta de sí mismos , y con­centrándose en el pensamiento "Yo soy Pedro Ouspensky" "Estoy ahora aquí". Traten de no pen­sar en nada más, simplemente siguiendo el movi­miento del segundero y dándose cuenta de sí mismo s, de su nombre, de su existencia, y del lu­gar en que están. Mantengan apartado todo otro pensamiento.
Si son persistentes, podrán hacer esto por dos minutos. Este es el límite de su conciencia . Y si tratan de repetir el experimento inmediatamente después, lo encontrarán más difícil que la primera vez.
Este experimento demuestra que un hombre, en su estado natural, puede con gran esfuerzo ser consciente de una cosa (él mismo) por dos minu­tos o menos.
La deducción más importante que uno puede hacer después de realizar este experimento en la forma debida, es que el hombre no es consciente de sí mismo. La ilusión de estar consciente de sí mismo es creada por la memoria y por los proce­sos del pensamiento.
Por ejemplo, un hombre va al teatro. Si está acostumbrado no tiene especialmente conciencia de estar allí mientras lo está. Sin embargo, puede ver y observar cosas, el espectáculo puede gustar­le o no, recordarlo, acordarse de la gente que en­contró, y así sucesivamente.
Cuando regresa a su casa recuerda que estu­vo en el teatro, y por supuesto cree que estuvo consciente mientras se hallaba en él. De esta ma­nera no tiene dudas sobre su conciencia y no se da cuenta de que su conciencia puede estar com­pletamente ausente mientras él puede actuar razonablemente, pensar, observar.
Para una descripción general, el hombre tie­ne posibilidad de cuatro estados de conciencia. Estos son: el sueño, el estado de vigilia, la con­ciencia de sí, y la conciencia objetiva .

Algunas cosas las recuerdan muy vívidamente, algunas muy va­gamente, y otras no las recuerdan en absoluto. Solamente saben que sucedieron .
Se sorprenderán mucho cuando se den cuen­ta de qué poco es lo que recuerdan en realidad. Y esto sucede así, porque ustedes recuerdan sólo los momentos en que estuvieron conscientes .
De manera que, con referencia al tercer es­tado de conciencia , podemos decir que el hombre tiene momentos ocasionales de conciencia de sí, que dejan recuerdos vívidos de las circunstancias en que se produjeron, pero no tiene dominio sobre ellos. Vienen y se van por sí mismos, estando con­trolados por circunstancias exteriores y asociacio­nes ocasionales o recuerdos de emociones.

Surge la pregunta: ¿Es posible adquirir el con­trol sobre estos momentos fugaces de conciencia, el evocarlos más a menudo, y el mantenerlos por más tiempo, o aun el hacerlos permanentes? En otras palabras, ¿es posible llegara ser conscien­tes?
Este es el punto más importante, y desde el mismo comienzo de nuestro estudio debemos com­prender que este punto, hasta en teoría, ha sido totalmente olvidado por todas las escuelas moder­nas de psicología sin excepción .

*Todo esto tiene un sentido psicológico y se refiere al paso de una condición a otra en el desarrollo de sí mismo. Trata acerca de estados o etapas en el 'desarrollo interior'. O sea de cómo el individuo ha de abandonar lo que era antes y aquello a que se aferraba. Citemos una frase de esta narración. Este individuo, Lot, comenzaba a evolucionar. Tenía que dejar de ser lo que hasta entonces era. Discute, regatea y quiere irse a un pueblecito llamado Zoar. A la larga, el ángel accede y le dice: "Date prisa..'., nada podré hacer hasta que allí hayas llegado." Zoar representa un nuevo estado, una nueva condición psicológica; pero también es algo muy chico. Y al alcanzar Lot esta nueva condición, aunque aparentemente inferior a la que de él se esperaba, la versión dice: "El sol salía sobre la tierra cuando Lot llegó a Zoar." ¿Qué significa tierra? En el 'Padre Nuestro' se dice: "Hágase tu voluntad así en la tierra como en el cielo." Cuando en su desarrollo interior el hombre alcanza un nuevo estado de comprensión, se dice que 'el sol sale sobre la tierra'. La tierra del hombre está en el hombre mismo. A fin de evolucionar, el hombre tiene que dejar esta 'tierra', tiene que dejarse a sí mismo. Tomemos nota de que "destruyó las ciudades y toda aquella llanura, con todos los moradores de aquellas ciudades, y el fruto de la tierra." En la condición en que se hallaba, Lot recibió aviso de que tenía que huir al monte. O sea que tenía que alcanzar otro nivel en sí mismo, un nivel superior. El ángel le dice que no puede ayudarle en tanto no se haya separado de su antigua condición, que lleva por nombre Sodoma, y en tanto no haya llegado a otra llamada Zoar. No puede destruir la comprensión vieja hasta que haya logrado una nueva. Pero Lot duda de su capacidad para lograr esta nueva condición de si mismo. 'No podré escapar al monte', exclama. Y, hasta cierto punto, suplica que se le permita pensar y obrar como solía hacerlo en su condición anterior. Hay una condición que el hombre alcanza en sí mismo; y en ella no sólo ve por sí propio la verdad del conocimiento esotérico que se le ha dado, sino que él mismo se convierte en dicho conocimiento al practicarlo en la vida de tal modo que llega a ser tan parte suya que ya no puede prescindir de él; el conocimiento ya no puede ser algo que lleve a la memoria cuando disponga de tiempo. Hay una gran diferencia, una diferencia inconmensurable, entre lo que el hombre sabe y lo que el hombre es. Ni puede su saber convertirse en parte viva de si, a menos que advierta el supremo bien que hay en él y se dé plena cuenta de que tal bondad es su aspecto más elevado y que también es de muchísimo mayor importancia que el conocimiento que hada él conduce. Primero se reconoce la verdad del conocimiento y luego su bien, su bondad. Todo conocimiento esotérico es germinal en cuanto conduce a otro estado. De hecho es algo que crece continuamente y que va transformando su significado. De suerte que va cambiando en el hombre a la vez que va cambiando al hombre. Así, el hombre no puede retroceder ni aferrarse a lo que comprendió una vez, pues eso equivale a volver a ser lo que dejó atrás. Y verdad es que estas viejas comprensiones le serán peligrosas. Uno ha de perder una forma de vida para poder lograr una nueva. Jesús se refiere a la mujer de Lot a propósito del 'fin del mundo' en 'el día en que el Hijo del hombre se manifestará.' que nuestra propia inmundicia (la Sodoma que llevamos dentro) se alza justamente sobre
estos sentimientos de mérito y de amor propio y en el adjudicarlo todo a la propia inteligencia.
